Updates & Week 8.24-8.28

Hello Parents and Families!

This past week the kids were very busy and working hard as we began learning about Community Helpers, and people who live and work around us.

The kids were very focused on sorting and classifying tools and gear each community helper uses this week. We sorted and grouped tools vs. gear for each helper, and discussed how tools are things they use, while gear is what our helpers wear. We continued to practice counting using 1:1 correspondance by ordering out numbers 1-20 using police badges, and practiced rolling dice and building towers like construction workers. We also practiced using 1:1 correspondance and number identification by identifying veterinarian tools to count and match numbers in our vet books.

We continued being illustrators and writers by labeling images we draw and attempting to stretch out words using letter sounds for our firefighter drawings. We continued to practice story retelling (beginning, middle, end, and characters) and identifying the parts of a book (front and back covers, title, author, illustrator), and will continue to do so throughout the semester. We are continuing to work daily on alphabet letter and sound recognition, and counting/recognizing numbers up to 20 and their amounts. We focused especially on the letters D for doctor, N for nurse, V for vet, P for police officer, F for firefighter,  and C for construction worker this week.

The students and teachers enjoyed the many speakers and community helper visitors that volunteered their time and resources to help teach the kids about their jobs and roles as community helpers. Thank you to all the speakers that came to share!
