Updates & Week 8.31-9.4

Hello Parents and Families!

This past week the kids were very focused on finishing our community helper unit this week. We learned about postal workers, dentists, school staff, cooks, chefs, and food service workers. We had visits from the school principal, Dr. Mesa-Lema, as well as Pastry Chef Audra!

The students practiced sending mail to the post office by labeling and illustrating letters to friends and family as we practiced letter sound identifcation and writing. They also learned how to care for and celan their teeth as we learned about dentists; we practiced using dental floss, toothbrushes, and mouthwash. We created art portraying how we bruch our teeth using real toothbrushes and paint! In addition, we practiced 1:1 correspondance and number identification skills by rolling number dice to build and count teeth to add to our craft mout with tic tacs. Each day we also used number dice and dot dice to roll and color numbers matching our community helper of the day. In small groups some students practiced letter and sound recognition and writing, while others worked on writing and reading CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words.

We also had the opportunity to be pastry chefs when Chef Audra Fowler came to visit. She brought all the tools we would need to be pastry chefs, and after describing her job and demonstrating some of her own pastry creations to the students, they had a chance to decorate and create their own pastry creations! And eat them for snack, of course! We also practiced handling our own fruits and vegetables, cleaning and organizing them like grocers at the grocery store, and preparing them like food service workers do for us. We washed, dried, and chopped fruits and veggies for our snack as we learned about food service workers.

Check out images below of our students this week!

Audra Fowler and her oldest daughter Ayanna came in to teach us about being pastry chefs!
(Audra's daughter Siri is in Ms. Sandoval's class, and her other daughter Sophia was in my class last year!)

The students and teachers enjoyed the many speakers and community helper visitors that volunteered their time and resources to help teach the kids about their jobs and roles as community helpers. Thank you to all the speakers that came to share! Our next unit will begin on Sept. 7th as we begin learning about our 5 senses, and how they help us be aware and explore the world!
